Desperate Man Blues

Joe Bussard no es un coleccionista de discos.
No almacena objetos valiosos con enfermizo cuidado a los cuales jamás les dará el uso para el que han sido concebidos, él pasea por su sótano cometiendo herejías a ojos de un coleccionista como fumar mientras toquetea y reproduce constantemente sus viejos discos de 78rpm.
Disfruta del Blues, Jazz, Country, Folk, Gospel y diversas variantes de la música popular de los años 20 y 30 del siglo XX en EE.UU., de la que es un gran conocedor.

A sus 20 años fundó Fonotone Records que dirigió desde 1956 hasta 1970, ayudando a documentar y preservar el trabajo artístico de diferentes músicos como las primeras grabaciones del guitarrista y amigo John Fahey.

En "Desperate Man Blues" un enérgico Bussard habla sin tapujos de lo que para él es la esencia (ya perdida) de la música tradicional y muestra algunas de las miles de joyas que ocupan sus estanterias tras décadas de búsqueda puerta a puerta, preguntando por discos y consiguiendo recuperar lo que más tarde daría a conocer y que gracias a él y a otros "arqueólogos" no se perdió en el olvido.

Esa devoción por este tipo de música unida a la forma de conseguir los discos, el ser también músico y al rechazo que le produce el Rock n' Roll me recuerda inmediatamente al padre del cómic underground, Robert Crumb. Aunque a diferencia de este último, Bussard es un hombre muy abierto y sociable además de un gran charlatán cuando se trata de su pasión por la música.

Una pasión que sigue transmitiendo a través de su programa de radio semanal "Country Classics" que puede escucharse en directo por WREK Atlanta 91.1 FM o cuyos dos últimos programas se encuentran disponibles en esa misma página.

"A scorching, forty-five minute modern mondo with an intense, breakneck focus on self-abuse and sexual and moral deviancy within underground performance art and culture. Live footage of the performances of G G Allin, interviews with banned-from-drawing comic book artist Mike Diana, and a vitriolic ode to mass slaughter courtesy of the masked Full Force Frank, are amongst the film's more noticeable moments.

Mark Hejnar's film successfully recalls the mondo format in its fascination with cultures that deviate from the everyday, and its assumption that this interest will be instinctively shared by the audience. Indeed, a title-card which introduces startling (for the uninitiated, at least) footage of G G Allin defecating on stage and anally masturbating with a banana alludes to this, the title reading 'What You All Came To See.' Mainstream culture may be appalled, but Hejnar nevertheless appears to be goading it into admitting the presence of a grisly fascination. This is often shocking stuff, for sure, yet frequently with an intentional sense of absurdist humour (Diana struggling to make himself vomit, on demand, over a crucifix) that allows greater access into this patchwork of controlled chaos."
